The U.S. operations of the new Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. is focused on the Dermatology and Neurology and Other therapeutic areas as well as the company's most well-known consumer brands such as CeraVe®, Hissyfit® and Kinerase®. The new Valeant's headquarters are located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada with commercial and R&D facilities in the United States including New Jersey, Texas, Northern California, Southern California and North Carolina.
Since 2008, Valeant Pharmaceuticals acquired three companies based in the United States, including Coria Labs, Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences and Aton Pharma in the U.S., to grow its product portfolios in specialty pharmaceuticals, branded generics and over-the-counter (OTC). In May 2010, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International acquired Aton Pharma, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on ophthalmology and certain orphan drug indications, located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. This acquisition significantly enhances Valeant's Neurology and Other products franchise in the United States with both an in-line business and a development pipeline consisting primarily of orphan drug compounds. The acquisition of Aton fits into Valeant's long-term strategy to pursue diversified opportunities within the pharmaceutical market and offers another platform for future growth.
Valeant's key neurology products in the U.S. are Wellbutrin® XL for depression, Ultram® ER for chronic pain management, Xenazine for the reduction of involuntary movements caused from Huntington's disease, Ativan® for the treatment of anxiety disorders, Migranal® for migraine headaches, and Tasmar® and Zelapar® for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Diastat® AcuDial™ for the at-home emergency treatment of epileptic seizures.
Additionally, Valeant USA's key dermatology products are Acanya® and Atralin® for the treatment of acne, Zovirax® for oral herpes (cold sores) and Oxsoralen-Ultra® for severe psoriasis and mycosis fungoides, and Efudex® for precancerous actinic keratoses (AKs) and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC).
